A great guitar effects unit is the sonic equivalent of having pretty much every guitar, amp, pedal combo you’ve ever heard (and some you haven’t) sitting at your foot. As most guitar effects units now feature an incredible array of amp models as well, they’re also the ideal way to get exactly the recording sound you want or to DI straight into a PA, when you want to go lightweight.
