WEEE

WEEE 2006 (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is a regulation that affects all businesses, and all businesses selling related products must adhere to this legislation to avoid prosecution. In short WEEE operates on a ‘new for old’ and a ‘like for like’ basis.
For example, if a customer buys a guitar, and has an old one bought elsewhere that they want to get rid of, the business that has sold the customer a new guitar is duty bound to accept their old item free of charge, and to dispose of it in an environmentally safe way. However, if buying a guitar a customer cannot expect to hand over an amp for free disposal, since they are simply not the same product type. Customers have a 28 day window from the date of purchase to return a ‘like for like’ item under this regulation to the place where they made a purchase for a newer, similar product.
Note that the WEEE 2006 regulations do not apply to accessories or component parts, e.g. power supplies, as they are not a product in their own right since they need accompany another to function.
However, under WEEE 2006 customers are liable to cover the costs of returning items (e.g. bringing items to store where they made a related purchase) or to send an item back at their own expense if the purchase was made on-line, or by mail order. Businesses may collect but obviously the customer will be liable for an associated collection charge.
